Hans Rosling gave a cool data viz talk as part of the TED @ State series back in June 2009.

One of the things you can do with data visualization is to show relationships among people.  Here's an image about Libya's anti-Gaddafi movement showing part of the network of connections between individuals (created by retweeting messages) in the early weeks of the movement. The individuals from which users retweet the most are shown with larger labels. Credit to my colleague Ali Fisher.
