Master of Ceremonies Introduction - Speaker Bio
Laura Williams, a Foreign Service Specialist with the Department of State, is currently serving as a Watch Officer in the Department of State’s Operations Center. “The Watch” is the Secretary’s 24/7 information and crisis management center where watch officers alert, brief, and coordinate information for the Department of State’s leaders and between the Department and other agencies. After spending a year serving as a Watch Officer, Laura will take on the role of Innovation Facilitation Officer where she will focus on improving the technology that supports the Operations Center functions.
Prior to this assignment, Laura served in the Office of eDiplomacy where she and her team developed a vision for a next-generation of IT workers at the Department. Tying the vision to the Secretary’s 21st Century Statecraft goals, Laura and her team established a global communications effort to gather feedback from the Department’s IT staff serving in our U.S. embassies and consulates overseas. This information is now informing the Chief Information Officer’s roadmap for the next generation IT workforce at the Department. Laura has also served the Department of State overseas in our embassies in Cyprus, Algeria, and Italy.
In 1993 Laura graduated from The American University in Washington D.C. with a BA in International Relations. In 2008 she attended National Defense University’s Advanced Management Program where she earned the Chief Information Officer certification.
Laura and her husband have a 2 ½ year old son who is currently practicing his batting stance and engineering his own tech revolution.
