I want to interact at this intersection of technology and the D's of development, diplomacy, and (my area) defense.
Why is user need more important than cool tech? Or is it?
Cool tech certainly has intrinsic value! If I'm looking for inspiration (or a toy), then coolness is a must. But in my role as a finder of solutions for difficult problems, I have to place the users' requirements first. Under those circumstances, "crude but effective" often trumps "cool but...".
